What is a ribbon reading?

It is a form of psychometry using ribbons. A reader will observe the colours and textures of a ribbon and intuitively sense its meaning for a client. Different numbered placements or spreads can have various meanings. Some readers are able to bring through a mediumship message from someone in the spirit world.

History of ribbon readings

Ribbon readings are thought to have started by the travellers or gypsies following the Celtic tradition, who would sell their pretty ribbons to ladies wishing to adorn their hair. The ladies would also request a reading at the same time and so the tradition caught on.

Ribbon Spreads

There are some traditional spreads just for ribbon reading but it is probably a good idea to devise your own as it will be easier to remember your own placements.

A good start would be a 3 ribbon past, present and future.

Another reasonably simple reading would be with 7 ribbons with placements being

  1. Basic personality

  2. Positive parts of personality

  3. Undesirable parts of personality

  4. What is working in my favour?

  5. What is working against me?

  6. The way forward

  7. Outcome (Up to 3 months)

A more advanced method uses 6 colours with detailed meanings about the placements as 1st place, 2nd place etc in a reading. This is quite involved and a lot to learn off by heart!

To see both of these methods in action and learn about colour divination and ribbon reading please see my comperehensive Colour Divination and Ribbon Reading course on Udemy

Don’t forget you could read with anything colourful. It doesn’t have to be ribbons. You could use coloured pencils, chalk, scarves, knitting wool and buttons, dried and faux flowers. Try using patterned scarves and ribbons. Make your own spreads up. It all adds interest for you and the recipient of the reading.

Using ribbons with other types of divination

I like to add charms to my ribbon readings. It adds an extra dimension to a reading. For example in the photo shown opposite the pink ribbon has the symbol “karma” on it. This could point to a karmic romantic relationship. The mouse on the blue could mean anxiety or small worries surround communication. This being in the 5th placement which is what is working against me.

Crystals, tarot, oracle cards and runes can also be layered up with a ribbon reading to add clarity.

Below is my own creation- The Ribbon Cross Wheel Reading

It is a visually interesting spread using as many colours and shades you can lay your hands on. In fact it is an act of mindfulness to set the wheel up much like a mandala. The charms once again act as clarifiers.
